Your first stop will be the Church of Purgatory, followed by a visit to Piazza di San Francesco, where you’ll hear about the church’s history and the nearby Piazza del Sedile. As you wander through the Sassi, you’ll be mesmerized by the breathtaking views of the rock-hewn homes, alternating between steep climbs and descents. We booked a private tour of Matera and Alberobello for 7 of us and Lorenzo was our guide. He was friendly, spoke great English, and provided lots of interesting historical context about the villages, the architecture, and the people who lived in them. I feel like we all got so much more out of our visit than if we had gone by ourselves and just read descriptions out of guide books. The private group tour also allowed us to ask lots of questions and chat with Lorenzo about history, culture, food, wine, you name it. I highly recommend a tour from this group, or a private group tour if you are visiting with a large family.
